History of Thread-Stitch Binding

Thread-stitch binding actually predates adhesive binding. Previously, writing was done on parchment and wax tablets, but in the 6th century, a system was adopted in which the parchments were sewn together abd then stored with a cover. Of course all the stitching were done by hand, sewing the individual leaves together.
The binding of signatures by sewing them together was done manually until David McConnell Smyth invented the thread-stitch binding machine in 1871. Modern automated sewing machines were produced and became widespread after this date.
The thread-stitch binding system, which has been performed for over 1500 years, continues to be done today on high-speed automatic machines without any human touch and with the highest quality. The fully automatic thread-stitching and binding lines within Yoncahes continue this important tradition with due diligence.
